Cyber Security Awards 2023: And The Winner Is…

This week, I was invited to attend the annual Cyber Security Awards ceremony which took place in central London. As a nominee and finalist for the category ‘Cyber Security Influencer of the Year’, I was eager to find out whether I had managed to win the award. Attending the event with my friend and colleague Jady Edwards, we took the opportunity to network with as many guests as we could before being seated for a lovely three-course meal. Not long after the meal, the awards ceremony began and was hosted by Joe Tidy, BBC’s first-ever journalist focused on cyber security. As the first category was presented, I suddenly felt nervous, and at one point, I glanced at my watch to see my heart rate spike to 117. I think the most nerve-racking thing was not knowing which category would be called next! Nevertheless, category after category was called, and winners were announced. Some winners were able to attend in person, while others had left a video message to thank everyone. The event was also livestreamed to give everyone an opportunity to tune in and watch too.

After many categories had passed, my name appeared on the screen alongside the other nominees for the ‘Cyber Security Influencer of the Year’ category. Time suddenly slowed down, and as I awaited the next slide to appear with the winner’s name, I asked myself, would it be me? Would I finally receive recognition for my contributions? Then, suddenly, the slide changed, and the winner was announced. Unfortunately, on this occasion, that winner wasn’t me. Nonetheless, we cheered and clapped for the winner and continued to enjoy an evening filled with lots of drinks and photos.

Reflecting on this experience, I believe that being a finalist is still a remarkable acknowledgment of my dedication and contributions. The truth is nothing really changes. I will continue to share my knowledge, provide advice, guidance, and mentorship to both newcomers and veterans in the tech industry because I genuinely enjoy what I do. Making a positive impact on someone’s life is both meaningful and fulfilling to me. Although receiving an accolade would have been pleasant, there is always the possibility of being nominated and winning in the future. Regardless of not winning this time, my name is now permanently etched in the Hall of Fame… and that is more than enough for me 😆.

I would like to extend my appreciation to the judges and event organizers for the nomination and for hosting a wonderful event. I would also like to take a moment to congratulate all the winners and big shoutout to Jady Edwards for joining me at the awards ceremony. Lastly and most importantly, thank you to my fiancée for your support and to my friends, colleagues and everyone that has showed their support. Your unwavering support is what drives me to continue pursuing my passion. Thank you all sincerely for everything.

If you didn’t have the chance to watch the event live, you can watch it back here.
